‘Newburgh on Track’ – Dave Burnett, Volunteer

Before I was employed in Social Work in Dundee, I worked on the railways in Scotland from 1969 to 1986 at a time when railway equipment and stations were being updated and changed.

I have been a collector since the age of twelve and it was just natural to me to preserve or conserve items which were being discarded or destroyed never to be seen again on the railway.

So when I joined Newburgh Laing Museum as a volunteer, I met with others with the same attitude and interests as me, in particular, the late Tom Pearson who shared my collecting of postcards and photographs including railways and stations local to the east of Scotland.

This exhibition, ‘Newburgh on Track’ was inspired by Tom, and is dedicated to him.

Looking out some of my railway collection for the display has been a pleasure and I hope it evokes peoples’ memories and how important a railway was and is for the future.
