Our Remembrance Exhibition 2025
Our Remembrance Exhibition in October/November 2025 had a different format than usual. There were more artifacts to look at including log books, ration books, medals etc also various items lent to us for the exhibition by Fife Cultural Trust. The soldiers photos were displayed in books, copies of which are for sale.
This is always a popular exhibition and we loved our visits from the schoolchildren from Newburgh Primary School and this year also from Dunbog Primary. They were very engaged with all the uniforms and gas mask (replica!) that they could use, as well as the powdered egg and milk!
In 2009, a group of Newburgh youngsters were invited to Italy to take part in the 65th Anniversary Commemorations of the Anzio Landings. The six pupils uncovered the forgotten story of local twins, John and Thomas Cairncross, who died on the same day in Anzio in 1944, while they undertook a study of the towns war memorial. Their research was conducted in 2006 while they were P7 pupils at Newburgh Primary but were now 3rd year pupils at Bell Baxter High School, Cupar.
They won the Royal British Legions National School War Memorial Competition. This competition was launched to encourage young people to visit their local war memorial and learn about the sacrifices made in conflict.
The results of the pupils’ research was an impressive PowerPoint presentation which included their own poetry and songs. Their presentation was subsequently produced as a DVD entitled ‘We Will Remember’, which has been sold locally and nationally, via the Royal British Legion Scotland (RBLS).
Proceeds of the DVD have been equally split between RBLS charities and a War Graves Visitation Fund.
Their success in the competition won the pupils a trip to London with accommodation provided by HMS Belfast.
All of this was made possible due to the dedication of the teachers at Newburgh Primary School fundraising by family, friends & the amazing community of Newburgh.
